What is Combustion?

Reaction that involves a substance rapidly combining with oxygen, usually accompanied by a flame.

Combustion

  • All combustion reactions require ignition. Ignition is often in the form of friction (e.g. striking a match) or electrical energy (e.g. an electrical spark or lightning strike).

  • Combustion also needs a type of fuel to react with oxygen.

Combustion and energy

Combustion is a fast reaction that releases energy in the form of heat, light and sound.

Solid fuels

  • Coal
  • Wood
  • Metal

Liquid fuels

  • Petrol
  • Diesel

Gaseous fuels

  • Methane
  • Propane (LPG)
  • Hydrogen

Word equation

fuel + oxygen → oxide

Examples

magnesium + oxygen → magnesium oxide + energy (heat, light and sound)

Results

Very fast combustions result into explosions.
